Is An All Boys School Right for My Son?
The decision to send your son or daughter to boarding schools for a higher education instead of traditional public or private schools is exciting! There are both benefits and concerns that surround the decision to send a child to boarding school. One of the decisions that many parents focus on is whether a coed or an all boys school will be better for their son. If you have a male child you are probably wondering whether boarding schools that only admit boys will be a benefit or a hindrance to your son later in life.
Although socialization and interaction with the opposite sex can be very important for a child’s development, there is a slowly increasing school of thought that proposes that too much time spent in a dual gender environment can actually be a distraction to your child’s academic success. Social science researchers have found that when boy and girl students are educated in the same classroom, they are often distracted. This makes boarding schools that cater to one gender over another an advantageous educational choice.
While both genders of students have the capability to comprehend and be very successful at a wide variety of subjects, there are documented differences between the way that boys and girls learn. There is no reason why your daughter can’t excel at math and science, just like there’s no reason why your son can’t explore literature or the culinary arts. In typical school situations, however, teachers can only use one method at a time to teach these subjects, and the curriculum and teaching style can often hinder one of the genders.
If you are wondering if all boys boarding schools will be right for your son, ask yourself whether or not the schools you are considering have tailored their curriculum to the particular learning needs of boys. Male children can benefit from a hands on learning style that incorporates physical activity and the use of visual learning techniques. Because there is not as much pressure to only adhere to boys classes or activities, boarding schools that are gender specific can provide a unique environment for your son to explore all of their talents and interests.
