About FMA - Fishburne Military Academy
When Professor James A. Fishburne founded his beloved school in 1879, the South was still recovering from the ravages of the American Civil War. Fishburne, a former student and protégé of Robert E. Lee, then president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University), understood the importance of educating the next generation of America's leaders. A forward-thinking man of letters, Fishburne followed the example of his mentor, Robert E. Lee, in focusing on education as the surest way to rebuild the post-war South.
"It is my purpose," Fishburne wrote, "to have here an institution which shall rank as first class in everything that constitutes true worth, and from which shall go forth loyal, earnest, industrious boys and young men, well equipped for the duties and responsibilities of life, and above all else, to maintain a high standard of honor and integrity in the Corps of Cadets."
Today, Professor Fishburne's original vision still thrives within the walls of Fishburne Military School; indeed, it is as important to our nation as it has ever been. Fishburne not only trains young men for the challenges of college and university life, but also for ultimate success in adult life as good men and good citizens -- true leaders in their respective communities. Through a time-tested program that combines a rigorous academic curriculum with military leadership training, Fishburne ensures that each of its graduates are equipped with the tools necessary to practice Leadership for Life.
Mission
The Fishburne Military School mission provides each cadet with a healthy physical and mental environment, a sound academic foundation united with ROTC leadership training— and secures an understanding about the obligations of honor, citizenship and self-discipline.
Since 1879 this guiding principle has been the foundation for all aspects of life at Fishburne. From the time Professor Fishburne founded the school until today, the faculty, staff and administration have worked to maintain the high ideals necessary to provide our Corps of Cadets with quality instruction and to foster the atmosphere that provides Leadership for Life.
From the moment a Fishburne Cadet matriculates until the time he strides proudly across the graduation stage, the FMS Mission permeates every aspect of his experience. Academic achievement, athletic participation, attention to detail, time-management development, personal accomplishment and pride ... these are the direct benefits of the Fishburne Mission.
