Our Mission Statement
In 1850 Frederick Gunn established a school based on the belief that strength of character was the goal of education. Today, The Gunnery rests on the four cornerstones of character: scholarship, integrity, respect and responsibility. Character is forged in a cohesive, diverse community informed by a challenging college preparatory curriculum, a broad range of athletic, artistic and social activities and a faculty of scholars and committed educators dedicated to the intellectual and ethical development of every student. A Gunnery graduate is a broadly educated, socially responsible citizen with tested beliefs, strength of character and the courage to act on convictions.
Our Community
The Gunnery is an educational community that prizes intellectual adventure, shared curiosity and the lively interplay of ideas. The faculty and I have developed a demanding curriculum that will encourage you to learn as much as possible about the fundamental questions of human existence, to strengthen the skills of analysis and assessment, to become discerning thinkers and to develop capacity for creativity. You will be asked always to do your best, to entertain risk and sometimes to experience failure. The 21st century with its accelerating information and breakneck growth will be no time for the timid.
The Gunnery is an integrated living and learning community characterized by high expectations, trusting relationships and pervasive warmth. Many of the most important lessons you will learn will be on athletic teams, in community service and theatrical productions and in the dorms with friends. Our small scale and our advisor/advisee system allows students and faculty to develop close, enduring relationships. The Gunnery is also a diverse, global community offering a framework for your understanding of an increasingly complex world. Gunnery students come from 17 countries and 20 states.
