The Masters School
The Masters Co-Ed Boarding School Information:
Who We Are
The Masters School is a vibrant and diverse learning community. Each day our experienced and dedicated teachers engage, challenge, and support their students—in the classroom, on the athletic fields and the stage, in the dormitories, and on regular expeditions to New York City—doing all they can to help the young people we serve become their best selves.
With over 132 years of history and tradition, we continually draw upon the values and experiences of those who came before us to forge an ever stronger school for today and tomorrow.
The Masters School is set amid 96-acres of fields and woodlands overlooking the Hudson River. The school maintains a safe, scenic, and comfortable environment for living and learning while being only 30 minutes from the world’s greatest classroom- New York City.
Our Mission
THE MISSION OF THE MASTERS SCHOOL is to provide the challenging academic environment that, for over a century, has encouraged critical, creative and independent habits of thought as well as a lifelong passion for learning. The Masters School promotes and celebrates academic achievement, artistic development, ethical awareness, technological literacy, athletic endeavor and personal growth. The School strives to maintain a diverse community that encourages students to participate actively in decisions affecting their lives and to develop an appreciation of their responsibilities in the larger world.
Community Life
Our 24/7 community gives students opportunities for growth, friendship, entertainment, and fun. Athletic competitions, art exhibits, and music and dramatic performances are just some of the events that take place at The Masters School. In their free time, students follow their own pursuits: the Student Activities Center, library, gym, music building, athletic fields, and art studio buzz with activity. These activities build strong bonds among boarding and day students, who often come early, stay late, and frequently join in dorm activities.
Throughout the day, in and beyond the classroom, all our students benefit from the presence and guidance of faculty, many of whom live on campus with their families.
Harkness Teaching
Harkness tables, with their oval shape and low student-teacher ratio, are ideal for our interactive and inclusive learning experience that involves all students in dynamic discussions.
Students are expected to make positive contributions to every class, every day. By demanding daily preparation and participation, Harkness discussions foster in-depth understanding of course material and help students grow in their ability to listen, collaborate, and articulate their views while respecting those of others. The shape and small size of a Harkness table means every student has a front-row seat—there is no back row.
